Thompson, a name synonymous with exploraon
and cartography, carved his niche in the annals of North
American history through his extensive mapping of
Canada and parts of the United States. Among his
numerous
accomplishments,
the
establishment
of
Kullyspell House on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, in
what is now Idaho, stands as a testament to his pioneering
spirit and his role in the expansion of the fur trading in the
Paci c Northwest.
Born
in London in 1770, Thompson's journey to
prominence began at the tender age of fourteen when he
joined the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) as an apprence.
His keen interest in surveying and mapping saw him
transion om a lowly apprence to one of the most
proli c mapmakers of his era. Thompson's defecon to the
North West Company (NWC) in 1797 marked a turning
point in his career, leading him to explore and map vast
swathes of the Canadian wilderness.
